Mishka was just another pup surviving as best she could on the cruel streets of a country where animal welfare is non-existent. She was a tiny scrap of a thing living alone in a ditch, too scared to take food from the hand of the kind-hearted lady who tried to feed her. When Mishka was savagely captured by the dog catchers and taken to a notorious death camp the lady was distraught and contacted the wonderful people at Hope VMS who did not hesitate to act. Once Mishka was safe Maya took her under her wing and worked tirelessly to gain her trust, small steps were hopefully going to become giant leaps and bounds and when a home was offered it was the answer to Maya’s prayers.
Mishka travelled 1200 miles to the UK but sadly her new home was not the one she needed so very quickly her rescue team went into overdrive to find another safe place and another guardian angel. Suzanne offered her a wonderful foster home for as long as she needed it. No time restrictions, no pressure, just lots of love and patience. This broken girl was now going North but how to get her the 713 miles?
The Animal Team rely heavily on our volunteers and donations to help complete hundreds of transport runs every year. Often covering or contributing towards the costs of fuel and emergency boarding and make a variety of other contributions. On this occasion all Mishka’s transport costs were covered by the rescue, so it was the volunteers to actually make the journey that became the much needed resource.
The first leg of the mammoth trip was taken by Ani who collected Mishka and took her 220 miles to meet the next transporter, Chris. It was a late drop off, it was rush hour but the traffic Gods were kind. Mishka was safe but rigid with fear, she had no idea what was happening to her, she just knew this was another confinement and didn’t know if it would end well!
Four hours later Mishka arrived on the west coast of Scotland where she had been invited to stay in the welcoming home of Lee and her misfits. It was a much needed break and early the following morning Mishka, Chris and Lee left Ayrshire and headed to The Orkney Isles. There was a ferry to catch and seven hours later they were boarding and on the last leg of the trip. Suzanne was waiting and so was another special little lady. It was a dark October evening when the party arrived at their destination. Suzanne greeted them with the biggest smile. This was it; this was going to be home to this little lady who had already come so far but yet her biggest journey was only just beginning. Look how far she has come. Not only does she have the best foster mum in the world but she also has Gypsy, her best friend, they adore each other and whatever obstacle Mishka has to face her little pal will be beside her.
This is just one journey. This is just one dog. Her life was touched by strangers, by kindness, by a whole team of people ready to give this beautiful soul the chance she needed to be happy.
And they would all do the same again tomorrow.
